Description

This figurine of the so-called Chalandriani variety reflects the aesthetic and technical decline that marks the last stages in the development of the canonical type of Cycladic figurines. Named after a cemetery site on the island of Syros where the variety was first identified, Chalandriani figurines are characterised by flat forms, blocky and angular sculpting techniques, and a tendency to reduce the human form to its simplest geometric elements. The strict proportions applied to Cycladic figurines during the previous five centuries are now lost.

The figurine is made from limestone.
